About Rheumatology
Rheumatology involves diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal conditions and autoimmune diseases, sometimes referred to as Rheumatic Diseases. These conditions can affect the joints, bones, muscles, and tendons; and cause symptoms such as pain, stiffness, swelling, or deformity.
Autoimmune conditions occur when the body mistakenly starts attacking and damaging its tissues, usually due to unknown reasons. These diseases can affect various organ systems like the skin, eyes, heart, lungs, and nervous system. Common conditions treated by a rheumatologist include, among others, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Psoriatic Arthritis, Osteoarthritis, Gout, Lupus, and Vasculitis.
